Emcees Joey Valence & Brae took the internet by storm back in 2024 with their second album No Hands, a ubiquity that soon gave way to regular appearances IRL at festival stages across the world. Last month marked the one-year anniversary of their follow-up album, Hyperyouth, an equally compelling blend of hard-hitting rap and JV’s EDM-inspired beats that fueled their fans’ thirst for a deluxe reissue six months later with an EP’s worth of bonus cuts tacked on.
Still in celebration mode—always in celebration mode—the duo will be bringing the Hyperyouth tour through Seattle this weekend with a Saturday evening set at the annual Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival. In the meantime, we asked both factions of the duo to combine their powers for a playlist featuring a handful of pre-show favorites they rely on to get pumped, which include everything from Steve Lacy to Slayyyter to fellow Bumbershoot 2026 performers Chase & Status—not to mention plenty of Joey Valence & Brae.

Slayyyter’s new album is phenomenal. She’s amazing. I love the harsh electronic sounds I remember from groups like Justice being updated and applied to modern electropop. So, so, so good. This is my favorite song from the album.
Chase & Status, “Program”
I’ve loved Jungle and drum ‘n’ bass since I was in middle school. Chase & Status are absolute legends, and I can’t wait to see them at the festival. We literally play this song in our set.

“The Baddest” is the highlight of our set. It’s the ultimate party starter and the epitome of what it’s like at a JVB set.
Steve Lacy, “Nice Shoes / In Your World”
Steve Lacy’s new album is also incredible. We both can’t stop listening to it. This song in particular is my favorite, though. I’m a sucker for hearing the think break in pop songs.
BRAE
Fatman Scoop, “Be Faithful”
When I was kid my dad would put this song on and I’d freak out. This music video is also one of my favorite music videos of all time. Fatman Scoop is one of my favorite voices in hip-hop. RIP Fatman Scoop.
Jay-Z, “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)”
One of my favorite Pharrell and Jay-Z tracks. It’s so catchy—I dance every time I hear it.
M.C. Shy-D, “Big Booty Girls”
Old-school Miami bass–style music is my favorite genre, and this song is one of my faves. The bass shakes the mirrors off my car when I play this one.
Mac Miller, “What’s the Use?”
Mac Miller is my #1 most listened to artist every year on Spotify, and being from PA, he’s a Pennsylvania legend. This song is one of my most replayed. I love this song, this whole album, and all of Mac’s discography. RIP Mac Miller, wish we could’ve met him.
