Michelle Zauner—also known by her musical moniker Japanese Breakfast—has announced a new book entitled Thank You for Your Suffering. It marks the musician and writer’s follow-up to her monumental debut, the 2021 memoir Crying in H Mart. According to a press release, the book is a “deeply personal journey through the heart of South Korea, and charts Zauner’s dream of learning her mother’s native language in hopes of being able to read the diary she left behind, and to connect with her family in Seoul.”
Zauner spoke with ELLE about the new book and explained its relationship to her first authorial endeavor. “It felt like I spent all this time learning about Korean food and writing about that, and it just wasn’t enough. It made me suddenly really want to go further in connecting to that part of my mom’s history and who she was as a person, and so I really regretted not learning the language, and I felt quite embarrassed about it. I was really curious: If I did spend a year there, how much could I learn?”
