Spray Paint saw forests on fire as they drove into Sacramento to record their second LP of 2015, Dopers. As they tell it, “The studio we recorded at was surrounded by a harsh scene of bleakness, sadness, and homelessness.” Between meals at a 24-hour casino truck stop, the Austin-based trio laid down Dopers‘ eight tracks with Chris Woodhouse, who’s also worked with Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall. But where the shredded-foil grind that Woodhouse forces from those acts’ guitars serves as decoration on otherwise bright pop melodicism, here that horrific metal-on-metal wrenching stays at the very center. “It’s time to put the dog down,” George Dishner, Chris Stephenson, and Cory Plump drone in the chorus while bridge-plucked guitars chirp in agitation. There’s nothing pretty about it, and unlike tourmates Protomartyr, there’s nothing funny here, either. Just that howl purling into a tremble.
