Father John Misty is opening up our third eye with new single “The X-panded Universe,” out now via Sub Pop. The six-minute cut is classic FJM, beginning with buzzing strings, ominous piano melodies, and that inimitable timbre from Dr. John himself. The clever story-song features some OG Misty bars, like when he sings, “This Texas candy heiress / Between medications / On a padded room floor / Is our last hope.” The single also marks the third cut he’s released in 2026, following May’s “The Payoff” and “The Old Law” from January. Perhaps something new is afoot in Misty Land.
The artist also known as Josh Tillman also recently announced a solo tour, which actually marks his first time hitting the road on his own since 2013. Damien Jurado will join in support for the run, which begins on December 9 in Boulder and wraps up on December 19 in Carmel-by-the-Sea for the 4th Annual Big Sur Park School Benefit.
