David Byrne and composer Daniel Pemberton have shared “Let Me Sell You a Dream,” set to be featured in the forthcoming documentary about Tesla CEO, right-wing agitator, money-haver, and dipshit Elon Musk. Directed by Alex Gibney (Going Clear, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room), Musk opens tomorrow in New York and Los Angeles, and will hit theaters nationwide on October 16.
“It would be too easy and probably not as much fun to overtly criticize Musk,” explained Byrne. “Better, I thought, to try and get inside his head a little bit, to use phrases he himself has used in interviews and statements, and let the character in the song be the one who describes himself.”
The Talking Heads band leader recorded the track while on tour, cutting the song into a laptop before sending it off to Pemberton to produce the track. “When I wrote the words and melody to this song I hadn’t seen the film. But I trusted Gibney, I’d loved a bunch of his other movies I’d seen, and am a fan of Pemberton’s work. So when they approached me it sounded like fun,” Byrne added.
