Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave co-founder Tom Morello is no stranger to spearheading benefit shows and fighting for social justice. But his Power to the People festival on October 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland might be one of his most ambitious efforts yet. Bringing together generations of artists across genres, the lineup ranged from rock superstars Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and Foo Fighters to a new generation represented by grandson and The Linda Lindas, hip-hop trailblazers Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, and Killer Mike to one of music’s most enduring voices for social change, Joan Baez.

“It’s no accident that the concert was about three weeks out from the midterms,” Morello told Time after the event. “In a time where hatred and division are rife, this is a festival of love and solidarity. In a time where injustice is rampant, this is a festival celebrating those who are standing up against injustice. And in a time where artists are either being canceled or censoring themselves, it was a guarantee the artists were going to be able to play what they wanted to play and say what they wanted to say.”

The fest also featured unique collaborations and tributes, including Jack Black honoring Ozzy Osbourne with his Jack Sabbath band, featuring Tom’s son Roman Morello on guitar and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian’s son Revel Ian on bass, plus an appearance by original Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler. Another highlight was the all-star Soundgarden tribute billed as Suns of Soundgarden, featuring Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, Morello, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, and The Pretty Reckless vocalist Taylor Momsen.
