It’s something of a post-Millennial coming-of-age milestone at this point: putting a bookmark in the progress you’ve made in your professional life and ditching the big city for home and the sense of recharged batteries that come with it. With her third album Back to Pennsylvania, Anna Shoemaker aims to subvert the stereotype such a move has long held and present it as something positive, a way of shaking loose long-dormant ideas by dramatically changing your perspective.
It helps that “home” for Shoemaker is suburban Philadelphia, still an objectively cool place to hang out and recreate certain touchstones of one’s high school years (i.e. driving around aimlessly while blasting pop music). With Return to Pennsylvania dropping this Friday via +1 Records, Shoemaker invites you with her on that journey via the day-in-the-life portrait she put together in photos below. Pre-order the new LP here, and face-mask up with her perfect day in Philly below.
Wake up and go for a run or walk in the Wissahickon (bonus points if it’s fall). It’s so beautiful! Here’s me with my sister’s dog, Simon. He’s not much of a runner.
Coffee and crepes at High Point Cafe in Mount Airy.
The Barnes Museum with my sister and mom! One of my favorite museums I’ve ever been to.
Wawa for another coffee, duh.
Thrifting with my mom. This is New Life thrift, but honestly we can find something anywhere.
Facial with Elizabeth Valucci in Chestnut Hill. This is actually a spiritual experience.
My parents’ house for dinner. My dad has randomly become an incredible pizza chef and my mom makes a really good salad.
Brednbecks for ice cream and drive around listening to music like you’re in high school.
Watch a movie with my dad, maybe two.
Face mask in my childhood bed. Best day ever!
