UK alt-rockers Wolf Alice re-released last year’s The Clearing LP as a deluxe version with a handful of exciting B-sides—none more so than their cover of The Roches’ “Hammond Song,” which featured Bria Salmena and Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming. And while Cumming has remained busy in her own right as she continues to support her solo material on tour, she’s extended this collaboration with Wolf Alice by joining the band on the first leg of their North American tour opening for Olivia Rodrigo, where she’s filled in on bass.
The Unraveled Tour recently hit Chicago, where Rodrigo headlined the United Center. The evening provided Wolf Alice with the opportunity to take us behind the scenes of such a momentous occasion with a photo diary that extends from pre-show rituals—hair, makeup, singing Kings of Leon—to post-gig signings for local record stores. Check out their images captured by photographer Deanie Chen and the band’s Ellie Roswell (along with captions by Rowsell) below, and revisit our cover story on Wolf Alice around the release of The Clearing here. You can also find our recent feature with Cumming for her solo debut Julia here.
Julia in her dress she thrifted in North Carolina a few days previous.
Joff serenading us whilst we get ready.
This is the first and last time you will ever see me this happy.
Me just checking I spelt Wolf Alice right on the backdrop.
This is a perfect photo ’cause the guitar is covering his face.
Getting ready is either the most stressful part of the day or the most relaxing. It feels nice doing it with another girl, like we’re about to go to a party—which, in some ways, we are!
We decided we had been wearing too much black so we went for a little colorful number today.
Lining my lips with a blunt pencil is not recommended.
Julia in vintage La Perla and I am wearing Of Planet Earth.
Not sure exactly what’s going on here with Ryan, but I like it! A little Jennifer’s Body moment, I suppose.
OK, he can stop serenading us now.
No one knows that we were singing Kings of Leon here (“Molly’s Chambers”), ’cause we are proud Millennials and that song is everything.
This looks a bit like a brochure photo for a uni or something. I dunno.
Just lots of love on this tour.
I am 100 percent aware of Deanie, our photographer, capturing this moment. It is not candid at all.
No one knows I’ve been wearing these socks for three days in a row.
So cute!
In KNWLS—I like how it’s a play on jeans and white shirt. Bring back jeggings.
A delivery of washed socks. They mixed them all up, so we spent a good hour on this. Such fun!
I love Joel’s new pink Converse. Feels right for this tour.
My Niccolo Pasqueletti red shoes giving me a slightly distorted Dorothy aesthetic tonight.
Such glamour!
Signing Blue Weekend records for Chicago’s record shops!
