Upon the release of her latest album, Sorry, Kid, LA-based songwriter Johanna Samuels already walked us through a perfect day in her hometown—from a peaceful morning at the beach to crate-digging at Amoeba. What felt conspicuously absent in that day-in-the-life piece, though, was the company she surrounds herself with (human company, anyway), whether it be family or her songwriting peers.
The “Neighborhoods” session she filmed for us is another story. Set up in her mom’s backyard in LA’s Eagle Rock neighborhood with her sister Beck behind the camera and her friend Ian on sound, Samuels describes the two-song set as a “family affair.” Beyond that, Madison Cunningham joins her on the first song she plays, as she does on the album version of the Sorry, Kid cut. “So special to get to sing ‘Rare (the Runner Song)’ with my best friend Madi, who helped me during many phases of writing and recording the song,” Samuels shares. “Felt very full-circle.”
Check out her performance of “Rare” as well as a solo rendition of “Full Story” below. You can stream Sorry, Kid in full here.
