It has been one hell of a run for Adult Swim‘s 2015 Singles program. For the last eighteen weeks, the Cartoon Network programming block has dropped a fresh track from acts and artists like Peaches, Shabazz Palaces, and funky supergroup WOKE for us to download freely and enjoy forever. But all good things must come to an end and we must say good-bye to the AS Singles 2015 series. Thankfully, Run the Jewels is the group playing us out.
There’s a heaviness to RTJ’s newest track “Rubble Kings Theme (Dynamite).” Not only due to the heart-rattling and steady bass beat, but also because of the song’s serious lyrical content. “Surrounded by violence and murder” are the first words that come out of Killer Mike‘s mouth within the track, setting the scene for the number and the film that “Rubble Kings Theme (Dynamite)” comes from. According to the press release, “Rubble Kings chronicles life during the era of gang ruled New York City and tells the story of how a few extraordinary, forgotten people did the impossible — and how their actions impacted the city and the world at large by planting the seeds to what would become hip hop culture.”
