It doesn’t really matter how fly your clothes are, who your family and friends are, or how awesome your nicknames for food are, dating in the twenty-first century is hard. No one knows that better than Dev—the protagonist of Aziz Ansari‘s upcoming series for Netflix. Season one of Master of None, the semi-autobiographical sitcom that follows Dev (Ansari) as he tries to navigate the choppy waters of just “seeing someone” in his thirties, hits the streaming service early next month.

Within the first trailer for the show—which boasts costarring credits by Noël Wells, Eric Wareheim, H. Jon Benjamin, Lena Waithe, and Claire Danes—we get short snippets of scenes that take on larger societal issues with humor, including teaching children about race, the onslaught of online harassment that women face every day, and overcoming ethnic stereotypes in the workplace. This consideration to make Master of None a bit more than just a solid comedy is exciting and refreshing.
