“Prescient” is a word that gets tossed around often, but Maserati deserve a hearty pat on the back for coming up with a retro-rock sound about fifteen years ago, in between the time Giorgio Moroder stopped being hip and became hip again. In that time, they have swapped some members and accumulated no shortage of vehicular puns in albums reviews—none of which will be reprised here. But they haven’t lost their knack for propulsive, predominantly instrumental electronic rock that is as tense as it is collected. “Living Cell,” one of the few tracks with vocals, calls to mind Joy Division, while “End of Man,” which utilizes a vocoder, sounds more like Futureworld-era Trans Am. There’s even some gated reverb, which may or may not be an in-joke but sufficiently distinguishes the unfortunately named Rehumanizer from the quartet’s previous releases.
