Devonté Hynes, the singer and producer better known as Blood Orange, just released a video for the new song “Sandra’s Smile.” Shot in black and white and directed by Hynes himself, the clip opens on a long shot of Hynes and some friends dancing on a street corner; the effect is to make us think that they’ve always been there dancing. It’s a strong artistic move, particularly considering the song’s references to Sandra Bland (the Houston woman who died in custody this summer) and Trayvon Martin’s mother, as Pitchfork notes.

While there’s no indication yet as to whether “Sandra’s Smile” is part of a bigger project, Hynes will be putting on a show at Harlem’s Apollo Theater billed as Blood Orange and Friends. The show, which will find Hynes premiering new material, will take place on December 12.
