The temperatures are steadily dropping and we’ve all just about adjusted to having Fallen Back this weekend, which can only mean one depressing thing: it’s fall, herald of winter and harbinger of the death of all things.
But it doesn’t need to be so! Thanks to TÜLIPS, we can pretend otherwise. The LA quartet’s debut LP, Doom & Bloom, does exactly the two things its title suggests. Angie Bloom and Taleen Kali’s fresh melodies sprite across clean-crunching guitars with cheery vigor, which makes “Hotspur” and opener “Vertigo” sound a bit like Ex Hex with fewer bones to pick. But they’re just as adept at letting their blossoms wilt into feedback and violence, as they do on the ferocious “Queen’s Arms.”
Producer Greg Katz gives these songs plenty of space; even at its noisiest—and it gets plenty noisy—the record never feels claustrophobic, which in turn allows Bloom and Kali’s compositions to shine. So, sure, it gets a little dark in here, but there’s so much warmth radiating off of their harmonic singing that it’s impossible to feel chilly.
Doom & Bloom drops November 13 on Lollipop, but we have an exclusive stream below. Damn the forecast and crank it up below.
