Beach Slang, “The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us”

This is an album of gems, and really, Beach Slang only need to move a little out of their own comfort zone (as abrasive and blissful as it is) to step into the realm of punk rock heroism.

This is an album of gems, and really, Beach Slang only need to move a little out of their own comfort zone (as abrasive and blissful as it is) to step into the realm of punk rock heroism. The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us is a good album, but it was preceded by an EP so stellar that this long-form release tends to get stuck in the familiar; the danger of the sound mellows over the record’s ten tracks. It’s not that opener “Throwaways” doesn’t melt your ears and your heart—Feel Like Us just loses some of its momentum towards the back end. “It’s loud and wild / But I swear it feels soft,” says frontman James Alex in “Too Late to Die Young.”  Hallelujah.
