A blood-spattered Jon Snow is the sole character on the new promo image for the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones, which will return to HBO in April of next year. If you still haven’t caught up on the epic fantasy series, don’t read ahead unless you like spoilers.
Fans of the Game of Thrones universe know all too well that creator George R.R. Martin has a particular fondness for killing off the show’s most likable characters. But it still came as a shock to viewers everywhere when everyone’s favorite bastard was betrayed and stabbed repeatedly by his own soldiers of the Night’s Watch in the last moments of season five’s finale.
But there’s been wild speculation ever since about whether or not Snow is actually dead, even though Kit Harrington told Entertainment Weekly outright, “I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season.”
Though that would seem definitive to most, suspicions were rekindled when, in October, HBO confirmed the death of another character, Stannis Baratheon, but was mum on Snow.
Which brings us to the new poster—at first glance it seems to imply Snow’s return. He is standing upright, after all, but that blood is pretty menacing. And he does look a shade paler than usual. Has he been brought back by the Red Priestess Melisandre? Or is his body simply hanging from the battlements of Castle Black?
Looks like we’ll have to wait until April to know for sure. But regardless of Snow’s fate, if GoT has taught us anything, it’s that all men must die. Valar Morghulis.
