From 2004 to 2009, Chicago Tribune South Asia Bureau Chief Kim Barker was implanted in the Middle East, where she spent time living in Kabul and the surrounding areas. She turned her experiences there into the comedic 2011 memoir, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is who you have to thank for the above image of Tina Fey gleefully firing a machine gun.
Fey plays a journalist who embeds herself in Afghanistan in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which appears to be loosely based on Barker’s memoir. Once there, she struggles to find her place—both as a reporter and as a woman—in the local culture. The film also stars Margot Robbie as a fellow journalist, Martin Freeman as a Scottish photographer, and Billy Bob Thornton as a military official. You can watch her hunt for a story and avoid the sexual passes of a local leader in the trailer below.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is out March 4.
