Last fall, before your aunt knew about the tennis-Vine version of “Hotline Bling,” Erykah Badu dropped a cover of the Drake single (with an assist from her son, Seven Benjamin). Now she’s taking another fresh hip-hop track for a spin: Kanye West‘s five-day-old “Real Friends.”
As SPIN reports, Badu dropped the loose take on her Soundcloud this morning. “Trill Friends” finds her sitting on Kanye’s circular beat and pinning it down without having to say all that much. “Homeboys/Some of them we wish we never knew at all,” she sings. Despite the lack of verbosity, the tone of her voice and the wooziness of that beat keep Kanye’s melancholic intent in tact. You can check it out below.
