Between feature films like Chi-Raq, story-work for video games like NBA 2k16, and various documentary projects, Spike Lee has been awfully busy of late. New year, new work, so it seems, as Lee’s latest, a documentary about Michael Jackson called Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall is on its way out via Sundance this month before getting a wide release on Showtime on February 5.
For the project, Lee had access to archival footage and interviews, in addition to getting new words from an all-star roster of commentators. That roster includes Questlove, Kobe Bryant, David Byrne, Pharrell, The Weeknd, Mark Ronson, and John Legend, as well as various members of the Jackson family. Ahead of the release, a clip of the movie has been shared, which features some very enticing live footage, and Questlove and Byrne talking a bit about the amazingly weird lyrics of “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.”
