With today’s crucial caucus in Iowa on the horizon, the Bernie Sanders campaign brought out the (metaphorical) big guns for a rally on Saturday night in Iowa City. Vampire Weekend‘s Ezra Koenig and Chris Tomson were joined by Dirty Projectors‘ Dave Longstreth and comedy team The Lucas Bros (as well as the University of Iowa’s Hawkapella singing group) for a performance of “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” and “Unbelievers.” The impromptu supergroup closed out the night with Woody Guthrie’s classic “This Land is Your Land,” where they were joined on stage by Sanders himself. While he doesn’t make it to the mic, he does sing along and engage in a little arrhythmic clapping.
Of course, “This Land is Your Land” is a song Sanders is well familiar with; he covered it on his 1987 folk album We Shall Overcome. You can watch the video from Saturday night—and hear a clip of the 1987 version—below.
