LISTEN: Cullen Omori Offers Up Some “Sour Silk”

New Misery is out March 18 on Sub Pop.

Smith Westerns broke up at the end of 2014, and its members have since moved on. Max Kakacek, the lead guitar player, has formed Whitney, a low-key roots rock band (that sounds like it has a lot of potential), and Cullen Omori, the frontman, has embarked on a solo career, having recently signed to Sub Pop.

Omori announced his debut release, New Misery, last month with “Cinnamon,” which might have come across just a tad too strong (he literally lights a Smith Westerns poster on fire in the video). That said, today’s release—the song “Sour Silk”—is a lot more promising, and finds him getting back to the glam hooks that his group was known for. Wonder how it would sound with a more prominent guitar part, though…

You can listen for yourself, and check out Omori’s upcoming tour dates, below.
