If you caught that Superbowl trailer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, you’re probably well aware of how bad nostalgia adaptations can go. And for the most part, video game adaptations are guaranteed to be sub-par at best. For these reasons, it’s understandable to have a healthy amount skepticism at the news coming out of Tokyo this morning: Sega and Sony Pictures are working together to develop a Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Hajime Satomi, Sega’s CEO, revealed the information somewhat offhand in response to the question of how he plans to rebuild the company’s brand:

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

With a 2018 release slated in, that gives Sega and Sony a solid year to figure out that a live-action/animated hybrid will probably be a mistake. Either way, any possibility that renewed interest in the series will help garner a deluxe reissue of Masato Nakamura’s legendary music is OK by us.

It’s just a shame that Michael Jackson isn’t alive to contribute more to the cause.
