2016. “Adam Green’s Aladdin” trailer

Chances are that you already know the basic story of Aladdin. Poor guy meets rich princess, falls in love, uses a Genie to become a rich guy and win her heart, but she loves the poor guy for who he is on the inside and doesn’t care about money. Sometimes there’s a magic carpet involved and a fair amount of singing. Got it? Good.

It really is a good thing that you’ve already got the plot points to Aladdin in your head because, this morning, multi-talented artist/musician Adam Green (The Moldy Peaches) released the full trailer for his upcoming film adaptation of the tale and it’s completely nuts.

Handmade technicolor paper-máche sets and props immediately let you know that this Aladdin isn’t the one you grew up with, but the story of breaking down class barriers is still the same. The film is “a modern day version of Aladdin, with Green starring as the titular character, and explores the recesses of Green’s symbolic imagination wherein the lamp is a 3-D printer, the princess is a decadent socialite, the planet gets a sex-change and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet.”

If that doesn’t really give you any explanation that makes sense, let the star-studded cast (and official character titles) pique your interest: Green (Aladdin), Macaulay Culkin (Ralph the Rebel Leader), Natasha Lyonne (Aladdin’s Mom), Jack Dishel (Uncle Gary / Sultan), Alia Shawkat (Aladdin’s sister), Francesco Clemente (The Genie), Har Mar Superstar (British Druggie Guy), Devendra Banhart (Saucemaker), Bip Ling (the Princess), and Zoe Kravitz (Old Miner).

Watch the madness below.

Aladdin is out on April 15.
