Disney earned a lot of goodwill following the smash success of The Force Awakens, and if first impressions are anything to go by, it appears that they may need to call all of it in ahead of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The first new non-episodic installment of their “one-a-year” world domination plan has been shrouded in a relative degree of mystery to date (we had been told that it’s the pre–New Hope story of the Rebellion acquiring information to destroy the Death Star), but the space cat came out of the bag this morning with the “teaser” trailer.
In it, we’re introduced to Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Jyn Erso, who plays a rebel, as you might be able to infer from her line, “I rebel.” That stunning piece of dialogue aside, we also see glimpses at some unnamed characters surrounding Jyn, all seemingly new to the Star Wars movie universe, and played by an interesting supporting cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, and Mads Mikkelsen. The real name to remember as tethered to the film, however, is Gareth Edwards, the director, whose most recent directorial credit is the 2014 version of Godzilla…
If that seems like an awkward bunch to you, it kind of looks it as well—at least as far as you can tell from a minute and a half of footage. Take a look for yourself below.
