Birmingham’s Vulture Whale rose from the ashes of The Ohms and former Merge act Verbena, and while they’re not shy about their Deep South roots, the band are more informed by Iron City grit than they are the kudzu-draped jangle of their neighbor to the east.

In fact, “Hope It’s Alright,” which we’re pleased to be premiering today, takes its cues from the working-class shuffle of Thin Lizzy circa Jailbreak, the gutter dreams of The Replacements, and the brutal realism of fellow southerners Archers of Loaf. “It’s too late to run away,” Wes McDonald and Lester Nuby III sing in the chorus, their twinned vocals flirting with joy but ultimately returning groundward.

“Hope It’s Alright” is taken from Aluminium, which is out May 20 on Cornelius Chapel Records. Take a listen below.

Aluminium is out May 20 via Cornelius Chapel Records. You can preorder a copy here.
