While the term “indie rock” has evolved so much in its thirty-odd years of existence so as to include things that are neither “indie” nor “rock,” there still exists many genre-fearing indie-rock musicians. And if any band is willing to take on that mantel, in regards to both its production values and aural setting, it’s Brooklyn-bred Active Bird Community.
The quartet, which includes Carter McNeil, Andrew Wolfson, Tom D’Agustino, and Zach Slater, is fairly fresh on the scene, but their confidence shines through in their music, particularly on their single “Pick Me Apart,” whose video we’re eager to premiere today. The ABC gang has been friends since childhood and they highlight the nostalgia of living carefree at home in the clip for the melodic track. We see frontman D’Agustino getting roped into typical family gatherings and playing dress-up with his sister, as well as the quartet building blanket forts and running around Central Park with “capes.”
“I really wanted the video to include my family, and after toying around with different concepts, we landed on the idea of trying to reconnect with your childhood,” D’Agustino says. “We wanted it to seem honest and genuine so we got my twelve-year-old sister Kaitlyn to star in it, and she was a big part of painting that picture.”
Active Bird Community are playing The Bowery Electric in NYC on 7/23, but you can check out D’Agustino—both Tom and Kaitlyn—in the “Pick Me Apart” video right now.
