The thing about writing songs about your first major breakup is that, if you’re any good at it, you end up having to play those songs in front of other people. And if you’re really good at it—and Palehound’s Ellen Kempner is quite good at it indeed—you end up having to playing those songs in front of a whole bunch of people across the continent.
But Kempner’s no dummy; the songs on Dry Food, Palehound’s 2015 debut, are built around her fleet-fingered guitar playing, the lyrics tucked into turns in riffs that are packed into the corners of songs that turn on a dime.
Such is the case with “Molly,” a Dry Food standout, which the Boston group brought across the country with them for Pickathon last year. It’s the latest episode in the Slab Sessions—part of the Oregon festival’s 2016–2017 season—and it’s our pleasure to be premiering it this morning.
Like previous episodes of the Slab Sessions, “Molly” was produced by Half Stop Sessions. You can check it out below.
Pickathon runs August 3–6 in Happy Valley, OR. More information is available here.
