SBTRKT (the masked alter-ego of Brit musician Aaron Jerome) has released an eerie, interactive music video website into the world for his new track “Look Away” featuring Caroline Polachek of Chairlift on vocals.
The site for “Look Away” plays the track on repeat, while you stare into the cold, black eyes of an animated floating head. The site requires access to your computer’s camera, so users can attempt to make eye contact with the creepy, lifeless visage, but all she does is “look away,” like a reverse Mona Lisa, refusing to meet your gaze (which is probably for the best, if you want to avoid having visions of that face before you go to sleep tonight).
Caroline Polachek’s voice skips and jumps over the distorted keys of an ancient piano, distant and muted but still pervasively haunting. Dark yet ethereal, Polachek’s croon is the perfect accompaniment to SBTRKT’s digital rhythms. “Look Away” is just one of many collaborations on his upcoming LP Wonder Where We Land—A$AP Ferg, Jessie Ware, and Ezra Koenig (of Vampire Weekend) all make guest appearances on SBTRKT’s latest offering.
