Anders Rhedin makes music under the name Dinner, and today he’s serving up something nice and fresh for you in the form of a video for “Siren Song,” and that’s the last you’ll be seeing of cuisine puns in this particular post.
Because while his name might suggest a kind of lo-fi goofiness, the music Rhedin makes demands to be taken seriously. As Dinner, he revitalizes fading tropes, mining a kind-of knockoff 4AD sound from the mid ’80s and finding a rich and strange vein of sweetness. It’s not dissimilar from the work being done by Connan Mockasin (and, sure enough, Mockasin sideman Rori McCarthy plays on Rhedin’s latest record), but it’s lacking in the subtly sinister quality that makes, say, “I’m the Man, That Will Find You” both entrancing and difficult to watch.
Instead, Rhedin feels more openhearted, more vulnerable, even while he’s offering us a video pieced together from various sub-DVD-quality clips. Like a European Juan Wauters, the Copenhagen-born artist comes to you directly, and if you think he’s kidding, then the joke’s on you.
“Siren Song” is taken from Rhedin’s latest release, New Work, which is out now via Captured Tracks. You can check it out below, along with a handful of upcoming tour dates.
