Much of the music that’s defined 2017 so far has carried with it the weight of last year’s election—either directly or indirectly. And if there’s anyone in particular that you can bet has some thoughts about this whole state of the nation thing, it’s Dave 1, who somehow found time to get a PhD in French Literature at Columbia a few years back when he wasn’t busy making neo-disco pop with P-Thugg as Chromeo.
But it’s worth remembering that Chromeo are originally a Canadian group (hailing from Montreal), and they know that Americans still need something to dance to now more than ever. Right on queue, Dave 1 starts out the duo’s new single “Juice” with the line, “Relationships ain’t a democracy,” reminding everyone that love and politics are still two very different worlds.
Coming ahead of Chromeo’s upcoming album Head Over Heels—which will be the group’s fifth LP and first since 2014’s White Women—“Juice” is a sun-soaked beach day of a track, all glistening synths and crisp guitars over gigantic hooks. The appropriately sunny video, directed by David Wilson (who also directed the videos for Arcade Fire’s “We Exist” and Tame Impala’s “Let It Happen”), finds Dave 1 and P-Thugg suiting up in orange stilettos for an ATV ride through an orange grove.
