As Woodsist has evolved from a shitgaze beacon to a hub for art-rock revivalism, one thing has remained constant: a meticulous allegiance to the development of their godfathering Woods. With a roster consistently comprised of many current and former auxiliary Woodsmen—and current and former auxiliary members of Woods-affiliated projects—such uniformity seems like it should be a given, considering the labels’ artists all moving in the same campfire-inspired creative circles.
Night Shop is certainly no exception. Ex-Babie and former Kevin Morby drummer Justin Sullivan recently released “The One I Love,” the first taste of his upcoming solo debut as Night Shop—but where that track was a cut not too far removed from Our House on the Hill, “The Ship Has Sailed,” which we’re pleased to be premiering here, is a ballad that questions the finitude of love over soothing guitar licks. “The song is about the necessity of moving on from an obsessive kind of love, but with a spirit of kindness,” expounds Sullivan. “Sometimes I fear there is only a very limited amount of love in the world and if I walk away from a fraught situation, I will be alone forever. I don’t think that’s actually true, but some of that is in the song, too.”
