Questlove has a new way to enjoy a Philly favorite.
The drummer for The Roots and renowned DJ also knows his way around a kitchen, as evidenced by his award-winning book, something to food about: Exploring Creativity with America’s Innovative Chefs, not to mention a number of “food salons” he’s hosted across the country.
Already an investor in the Silicon Valley–based Impossible Foods, Questlove is putting his name on the new “Questlove’s Cheesesteak.” The plant-based take on a classic Philly cheesesteak will debut at Citizens Bank Park on opening day for his hometown MLB team, the Philadelphia Phillies.
The new offering is “in line with the Phillies efforts to make the world a cleaner place with their “Red Goes Green“ campaign, focused on sustainability,” according to a press release.
This summer, concert promotions giant Live Nation gets into the picture, rolling out “Questlove’s Cheesesteak” to forty of the company’s venues across America.
“We first tested this product at our annual Roots Picnic music festival in Philly in 2018,” Questlove explained of his new sandwich, which boasts a “melted cheese blend,” peppers, and onions, all stuffed into an Amoroso roll.
“Without any forewarning we offered the Cheesesteak in our VIP area which was mainly populated with friends and family and no one believed me when I told them the ‘meat’ was not beef, but plant-based,” he added. “My team and I saw an opportunity to roll out the product on a much larger level. To have the Phillies and Live Nation as our initial partners is great, as it speaks to my love for my hometown of Philadelphia combined with my love of music. However, the goal for this product is to create a global network of restaurants, venues, and retail locations where Questlove’s Cheesesteak can be purchased.”
First, Major League Baseball and Live Nation. Next stop: complete global plant-based sandwich domination. Always dream big, kids.
