You may know Shaun Fleming from any number of his artistic outlets over the years—drumming with Foxygen, singing hooks for Run the Jewels, tempting Christ, voicing Disney cartoons. But he’ll be in full Diane Coffee mode this April when he releases his third album and first release on Polyvinyl, Internet Arms, under the moniker, a decidedly glam take on Foxygen’s SoCal psych-pop revivalism.
Following the synth-driven first single “Not Ready to Go,” Fleming is sharing another track today, a more upbeat (though thematically similar—and just as catchy) number called “Like a Child Does.” Concealed behind the electronic pop soundtrack and Coffee’s harmonizing falsetto, lies the conflict addressed throughout Internet Arms, an internal conflict so often agitated by the freedom of personality technology increasingly permits.
“‘Like A Child Does’ is about acting out and the chaos it creates,” Fleming details. “When humans live in a state of denial about their behavior and choose to live out the same loop over and over again, at some point a breakdown is inevitable. The breakdown can be a powerful growing moment: You either see yourself and make a change, or fall back into the loop.”
Judging by his full immersion into digital music, it sounds like Diane Coffee had a growing moment.
Internet Arms, is out April 19 on Polyvinyl, with tour dates immediately to follow (listed below). Digital and physical preorders are both available.
