We have an enormous amount of respect for those lucky musicians, chefs, and artists who make their living via creative pursuits. But equally fascinating are the side hustles and part-time obsessions that so many of these figures dedicate their free time to. "Passion," to us, is a place that transcends the traditional signifiers of success, and where accomplishment is measured in personal growth and our ability to become the best and most authentic version of ourselves.
That's why we've put together the 2019 FLOOD Passion Issue, an exclusive digital series filled with details about the lesser-known passions of some of our favorite artists, debuting now and continuing on through the summer with new features.
This first issue features in-depth stories on Alexis Krauss, one half of the noise pop duo Sleigh Bells, who is also a gallant rock climber; Jessica Koslow, the chef and owner of hip LA breakfast and lunch joint Sqirl, whose path to food was inspired by her days as a champion ice skater; Hannah Hooper, the frontwoman of Grouplove, who doubles as a skilled painter with an upcoming solo exhibition; and the eponymous lead singer of psychedelic soul group The Marías, whose Latin heritage and love of Latin music growing up shaped the musician she became. We’ve also got some musings on Lizzo’s flute expertise, Hembree’s Galaxy Quest podcast, and Questlove’s life as a foodie.
