Legendary UK ska band The Specials are being recognized by the city of Los Angeles with their very own day.

May 29 has been officially declared “The Specials Day” in LA, thanks to Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, who introduced the resolution. The day will include an official commemorative certificate presentation at City Hall.

“The Specials’ legacy is emblematic of the strength derived from our diversity here in Los Angeles,” Rodriguez explained in a press statement. “Their music is an example that embracing our differences and uniqueness makes us more powerful.”

The Specials’ founding members Terry Hall, Lynval Golding, and Horace Panter are attending the certificate presentation at City Hall. The presentation is open to the public, and will be broadcast at 10 a.m. PST in Los Angeles on LA CityView Channel 35  and live streamed via LACity.org and on Facebook.

“We’re delighted to have May 29 named ‘The Specials Day’ in Los Angeles. We love the city and have found Angelenos to be some of the warmest and most enthusiastic audiences in the world,” Hall said. “We love spending time there and have made a great many friends over the years. It’s extremely rewarding to see our music resonate so deeply with the people of Los Angeles, and we thank the LA City Council for this honor. We share it with the fans.”

The Specials embark on a fortieth anniversary tour of North America on May 22 in Vancouver, BC. Their latest album, Encore, was the group’s first to hit number one on the UK charts.

The band plays LA on June 1 at the Novo, and will also perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the JKL parking lot in Hollywood on May 28. Get your free tickets to attend the Kimmel show here. See the full tour itinerary below.
