The film chronicles the pair’s romance on the Greek island of Hydra in the ’60s as part of a bohemian community of artists, writers, and musicians—an era of open marriage and “free love,” when Cohen was still a struggling writer. Marianne & Leonard also tracks the singer’s career trajectory and the evolution of his tempestuous relationship with Ihlen amidst his love affairs with other women.
Directed by Nick Broomfield (Kurt & Courtney, Whitney: Can I Be Me), Marianne & Leonard debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The movie is scheduled for release in the U.S. on July 5. Watch the trailer below.
