Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter won’t be released in theaters until early 2015, but it already looks to be one of the year’s most entrancing thrillers, and has just garnered three Independent Spirit Award nominations.

Based on a series of true events (warning: spoilers await you if you delve into the story behind the film), Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter follows a young Japanese woman’s solitary journey through the freezing woods of North Dakota as she goes on search of a mythical treasure (said to be inspired by repeated viewings of the Coen Brothers’ cult classic Fargo). Directed by David and Nathan Zellner and starring Rinko Kikuchi as the titular character, Kumiko combines the mundanity of a young girl’s office drone lifestyle with the eccentric spontaneity of her trek through a foreign land for nonexistent treasure, and the strange characters she encounters on her hunt.

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter opens in theaters February 27, 2015. Check out the official trailer below.
