This Sunday, August 4, the music community of Los Angeles will gather to celebrate and mourn the life of the artist known as Ras G at the Lodge Room in Highland Park (104 North Avenue 56, Los Angeles, CA 90042).
Born Gregory Shorter Jr., Ras G was a renowned hip-hop and funk producer and co-founder of indie record label Brainfeeder. He was confirmed dead two days ago at the age of thirty-nine; no specific cause of death has been revealed, though he’d been known to suffer from health troubles.
Ras G is responsible for twenty-four albums and mixtapes in the far-out, Afrofuturist vein, collaborating with the likes of Thundercat, Flying Lotus, and Open Mike Eagle over his eleven-year career—all of whom offered their remembrances on social media. Ras was a mainstay at Los Angeles’ Low End Theory, a night club with significant influence on the city’s funk, jazz, and electronic music scenes.
As for Sunday’s memorial, special guests are promised to perform (but TBA), and the funds from every ticket purchased will go directly to the Shorter family.
The doors open at 6 p.m., all ages welcome, tickets $25. Get yours here.
