David Berman, beloved poet and the singer-songwriter behind Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, passed away today at the age of fifty-two, as announced by his label Drag City via Twitter.
Along with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich, Berman founded Silver Jews in 1989. The group disbanded nine years later, but left a massive legacy behind.

Berman released his eponymous debut album with Purple Mountains last month, and was about to leave on tour. As of now, no cause of death is known.
