Shia LaBeouf is an odd and temperamental fellow, to say the least—but he’s also never been one to shy away from searing vulnerability, on-screen or off. LaBeouf wrote the screenplay to upcoming film Honey Boy based on his own life: his tortured relationship with his father, being shunted into stardom, struggling with substance abuse and arrests and going to rehab.

The film is a fictionalized version of events directed by Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach, LoveTrue), in which LaBeouf plays a character with a severely receding hairline meant to emulate his dad, and actors Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges play LaBeouf himself at varying ages. It also stars FKA twigs in her first feature role as a kindly neighbor to a young LaBeouf. Interestingly, the two have been romantically linked in the past; clearly, they remain on good terms.

Honey Boy hits theaters on November 8.
