Vetiver formed almost two decades ago within the same bizarro-folk circles as Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom, though Andy Cabic’s approach to Americana was always less, um, strange than his contemporaries. Countering the free folk of these peers, Vetiver has always been an outlet for tidy, pop-oriented singles and lushly produced folk numbers flirting with psychedelia.

Today, Cabic is officially announcing Up on High, his first LP since 2015’s Complete Strangers, which embraces the stripped-down nature of its predecessor while otherwise proving a mostly straightforward acoustic roots rock ballad—swap the track’s slide guitar for a barroom piano and you nearly have a stripped down rendition of “The Weight.”

“Hearing playback of the basics we recorded live for this—bass, drums, acoustic guitar, scratch vocal—proved that this fundamental approach was the core of what would work for these songs, this album,” Cabic states of the track. “I heard it here first.”

Up on High is out November 1 via Mama Bird Recording Co. You can pre-order it here. Dates for the tour can be found below.
