September 27 marks the day the die-hard Tegan and Sara fans among us have been waiting twenty years for: The Canadian songwriters will be releasing their ninth studio album, Hey, I’m Just Like You, which compiles recordings the twins made in their late teens, redone to match the musical climate of 2019. A few days prior, we’ll even be blessed with an autobiographical account of the duo’s high school years, which should neatly set up the album’s angsty lyrical content.

Early ripper “I’ll Be Back Some Day” and the more subdued title track have provided an enticing preview of the record’s range, and today T&S split the difference with the raging ballad “Don’t Believe the Things They Tell You (They Lie),” a cautious-if-not-slightly-paranoid look at personal relationships soundtracked by staccato acoustic strums before being rendered by a boss electric guitar solo two minutes in. Watch the lyric video below to experience the tectonic shift.

Hey, I’m Just Like You is out September 27 via Sire Records (pre-order), while Tegan and Sara’s memoir, High School drops September 24 (pre-order). Catch the twins play Colbert on release day, and check out their mostly sold out tour schedule to see if, by the grace of god, your city is one of the two with tickets currently still available.
