In the decade spanning 2005 to 2014, we could rely on Dan Snaith’s Caribou for a steady output of quality house music, spanning the entire gamut from the microhouse twitches of 2009’s Swim to the deep house grooves of 2014’s Our Love—even briefly venturing into tribal territory with his Daphni project.
Today, we’re happy to accept Caribou back to the party with his impressively smooth new stand-alone single “Home,” which accompanies an expansive list of 2020 tour dates, his first since his last press cycle five years ago. Prominently featuring a loop of Gloria Barnes’ “Home,” the two-minute song is a plunderphonic ride as descendent of The Avalanches as it is anything in Snaith’s arsenal.
“Sometimes making music feels like a process I’m in charge of…but there are other times when things just present themselves and my job is to follow their lead,” Snaith says of discovering the potential songwriting influence of Barnes’ song. “It wasn’t until the circumstances of someone close to me mirrored the refrain of the original song that the track all came together.”
