The first glimpse of Matthew E. White’s sophomore album (and debut on Domino) Fresh Blood came in the form of an abstract album teaser shot on Super 8, equal parts melancholy and mysterious.
Completely flipping the vibe to the other side of the spectrum, White has now shared “Rock & Roll Is Cold,” a seethingly catchy three-chord romp that tastefully takes influence from one of his idols Randy Newman, a man who also knows a thing or two about using the twelve-bar blues to his satirical advantage.
White himself explains that the new song is “about how we continue to take the most vibrant, soulful, deep music and make it a caricature of itself. We look into it, force it to turn in on itself, force it to turn back on itself, and we lose the source, we lose the mystery, the magic, and we seem to be unaware that any of that is even happening.”
Your new Americana overlord, ladies and gentlemen.
