Don’t post those Best Songs of 2019 lists yet—last year’s biggest Q4 upset story is back with a new single to commemorate one year of El Mar Querer, the LP that inserted Rosalía into many publications’ best-of lists mere weeks before they were published.
“A Palé” is more of the stellar flamenco-nuevo/art-pop mashup we’ve come to expect from the Spanish performer, with another video filmed in an industrial setting. This time with an eyebrow paying respects to Frida Kahlo (or Anthony Davis?) and a nail game rivaling Rihanna’s (or Freddy Krueger’s?), Roslía’s latest clip is most of all an homage to the outlandish industrial set pieces of early-’00 rap videos, with the singer at one point sprawled out on an assembly line, at another taking an enormous leap from one shipping crate to another twenty feet away.
Co-produced by Rosalía, El Guincho, and Frank Dukes, “A Palé” arrives on the heels of Rosalía’s recent RIAA gold–certified and MTV EMA–winning “Con Altura” alongside J Balvin and El Guincho, and precedes her performance at the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas on November 14.
