The songs on GIRL SKIN’s debut album Shade is on the other side belong to a long tradition of Bed Stuy songwriters writing and recording lo-fi albums in their own living spaces. But where Shade differs is that Sid Simons is joined in this traditionally cramped space by five bandmates, creating a vivid strain of rural folk that sounds like it could only be imported from upstate.
The first single, “Forever & Always,” exemplifies this with the help of a rurally shot video, placing the six-piece far outside the city limits—not to mention several decades in the past. Full of longing vocals, raging guitar solos, and baroque harmonies, the playful video complements the restorative powers of the songs lyrics. “It’s a love song,” Simons clarifies, “simple as that. Not walking away from something because it’s hard but staying because it’s worth it. It’s also pretty much make-up sex in form of a song.” Watch the clip below.
