On a busy day for new music announcements, SoCal songwriter Day Wave’s breezy new single—and first new music since 2017—flew mostly under the radar. While it’s yet to be attached to a forthcoming album, “Starting Again” is a refreshing indie-pop anthem in the same vein as Phoenix, appropriately addressing the process of rising from the ashes.

“I wrote ‘Starting Again’ in a time when I needed to get out of a creative and emotional rut,” Jackson Philips, the band’s sole member, explained in a press statement. “It’s about ridding yourself of people who convince you that you’re not good enough. Sometimes that person can be yourself, and it can be a struggle to start over with a new outlook. But I still try.”
