Green Day was among the first wave of bands to call off tour dates when coronavirus first began sweeping the nation back in late February. With Armstrong on self-quarantine like most of his fellow Americans, the Green Day frontman has used his downtime to record a version of Tommy James and the Shondells’ 1967 hit “I Think We’re Alone Now.” For another generation, the song will best be known for pop singer Tiffany’s smash 1987 take on the tune.
“Dear friends. While we’ve all been in quarantine I’ve been reflecting on the things that matter the most in my life. Family, friends and of course music,” Armstrong shared in a statement along with the video. “I recorded a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ in my bedroom. I figure if we have to spend this time in isolation at least we can be alone together. Love BJ.”
Armstrong takes the song straight to the Boulevard of Broken Dreams, giving the track a polished pop-punk makeover that suits it just fine. Check out his version below.
