It’s the post-punk supergroup we didn’t know we needed until now: Skate legend Tony Hawk, funny man Jack Black, and Devo visionary Mark Mothersbaugh came together at Mothersbaugh’s Mutato Studios to play Devo’s “Freedom of Choice.”
With a band filled out by skaters Steve Caballero, Riley Hawk (son of Tony and founder of Warish), and Devo drummer Josh Freese, the group blazed through the title track of Devo’s legendary 1980 album with a version that Mothersbaugh himself says “might just be the best version of that song I’ve ever heard.”
The unexpected musical alchemy was conjured on the occasion of Hawk releasing remastered versions of the beloved video games Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. It’s all captured in the latest edition of Black’s YouTube series, Jablinksi Games. The clip is rounded out with footage of the crew playing the remastered games, and then dropping in for a real-life skate session. Watch it all go down below.
