2020 seems to be the year for a rap-rock revival, with a pandemic-snuffed Rage Against the Machine reunion and new singles from Ho99o9 and nothing, nowhere. The later—and more versatile of the two—is dialing it back for his latest single, though, which sounds like a Goth Boi Clique single steeped in a turn-of-the-century boy-band aesthetic.
“lights (4444),” a considerably toned-down follow-up to “DEATH,” is made up of a minimalist trap beat and somber vocals and lyrics visually paired with a video which recalls early aughts hard rock and soft R&B. “I wrote ‘lights (4444)’ after meditating and coming up with the line ‘Pain comes in different shades,’” n,n. shares. “Essentially the song is about being a prisoner of nostalgia and the inability to enjoy the present moment no matter the circumstances.”
